Somali mother sitting by the fire.

Tell me how you race the morning.

Chase the day and host the evening.

Somali mother tell me how to live hard.

And yet smile easy just like you.

Explain to me why the world is less giving.

Less kinder and less compassionate then in your time?

Somali mother, mother of compassion and warmth.

Unfold your prime days.

Tell me how walk on, go on working even when you in pain.

Open my eyes to the coming seasons.

To the chorus of the chats of our headmen.

To the undying tales of your time.

Open my ears to the sun of our hearts.

And tell me how to live hard.

And yet smile easy just like you.

Somali mother pounding away.

Tell me how to pound tons of wisdom flour.

Teach me how to partake in ancestral dialogues.

Tell how to balance the round pot of tradition on my head.

How do we treasure the roots from which we suckled our first feed.

Tell me hooyo, why the sun rises in the east and sets in the west.

Why the dogs bewail the virgin moon?

What makes the stars twinkle?

Hooyo, why does the wind sing a strange song.

Tell me Somali mother.

About the counsel of the wise.

Sing me a Somali song.

Teach me a Somali dance.

Teach me Somali mother.

How you race the morning.

Chase the day and host the evening.

Somali mother tell me how to live hard. And yet smile easy just like you.
